Laney Jones
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Sounds You Need to Know
Out of the sea of submissions, live shows in various cities I catch each year and festival lineups, it's really only a handful of singer-songwriters that seem to grab my attention.. And that lead-in is what bring us to our latest artist spotlight.
Laney Jones is a singer-songwriter originally from Mt. Dora, FL, currently in Boston attending Berklee College of Music. (She was awarded the prestigious Grey Fox Bill Vernon Scholarship.) Raised on an exotic animal farm surrounded by an alligator-infested lake, she artfully spins tall tales of love, life and adventures from down in the swamplands. "My style is a mix of blues and bluegrass and in the past year I've had the privilege to share the stage with Alisson Krauss, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Della Mae, Donna the Buffalo, and many more," writes Jones recently in a follow-up email. What I heard in the notes of her music are a dedication to merging two worlds in music and a little magic that makes me think she will make something of herself. Her banjo play is outstanding. Her voice is angelic.
The latest record is called "Golden Road." A new band outfitted with Berklee colleagues, "Laney Jones & The Lively Spirits, are charting a tour course the band anticipates will take them national this year. This is someone you need to know!
