BOA Pavilion - 8/9/10

One to Watch in 2010: VV Brown

VV Brown - Everybody

Coming off a spot on the David Letterman Show and sharing a bill with Maroon 5 and Owl City, VV Brown ripped-up the Bank of America Pavilion here in Boston on a hot summer night. Fans were left wanting more after a stunningly short set (just 15-18 minutes) but Brown showed she knew what to do with the time allowed. Each moment was spent proving just how powerful she could be.

VV Brown's debut album, Traveling Like The Light, was released last summer with the single, Shark in the Water, charting in several countries - the highest being in the US Dance charts coming in at #11. This young singer/songwriter is not new to success as she has had several songs featured in TV and movies such as Desperate Housewives, 90210, Ugly Betty and others. (If you have heard her work, it's quite possible you may be a VV Brown fan and you don't even know it.) She has also been busy developing a comic book with collaborator David Allain as well as continuing a modeling career.

Brown's sound draws from Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald - jazz legends she listened to growing up. Brown describes her sound as "musical mashed potatoes", which I may have to agree with. I hear the sounds of 50's Doo-Wop, mixed with electronics and a killer voice to make a nice collection of powerful songs. In Boston, her band was tight and her performance - for the short time allotted, captivated me. Next time she's in town, let's hope she gets more stage time, so we can really get into what she has to offer!
