Bootleg: Bob Dylan at San Jose

RED HOT BOOTLEG:
DYLAN IN SAN JOSE '92


Back in the March 6, 2008 issue of Rolling Stone, writer Andy Greene tapped Bob Dylan's 1992 performance in San Jose as one of Bob's best performances of the period (if you are one of the dudes who has his shit in order, it's on pg 61). His "Bootleg" pick in the issue is a top version of "Idiot Wind" which appeared near the end of the long evening in San Jose. (The date was May 9th, 1992 and the school's University Center.


Collector's Notes - What Mr. Greene didn't realize when he wrote his plug of this now historic evening - all references were missing from the Rolling Stone piece - is that T-Bone Burnett was Bob's all-star guest that night. Burnett was present but did not come out to play until Idiot Wind appeared in the set list. The already beautiful version of Idiot Wind celebrated by the magazine sounds even better with this revelation. Here's the show.

I bought this bootleg ina record store back in the mid-90s. One of the first and only bootlegs I actually paid for. Ive got to say that this show is one of my favorites from the very beginning, I now have over 300 shows. Theres just something about it, from the solo "Little Moses" to my absolute favorite live version of "Shelter From The Storm" this disc rocks from start to finish. A definate must have. Some of his lyrics are intelligible but the quality of this recording and dylans delivery of the songs is excellent...and the music is remarkable.

I went to this concert, graduated from SJSU and lived a block from the campus for 15 years. That church or whatever it is is not located on the SJSU campus. Also, I'm in the minority but I hated the show. I'd seen Dylan about 60 times between '77 (Last Waltz) and '92 and was sure he was done. I took '93-'95 off, went to the '95 show at the Warfield in SF and was blown away anew and saw him 100 or so times between then and now. At the time my recollections of the show were: the sound was crap inside the event center, the two drummer thing was NOT working and Bob seemed disinterested. Listening to it now, it was a skosh better than I remember but not that much.

I was at the show and thought it was great. The sound wasn't much to brag on from my seats, but it must have been good somewhere judging by the sound of the boot. What stuck with me was the version of Most Of The Time. That was the highlight for me. Along with Idiot Wind.
